Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw was selected through an open competition for the Indian Military Academy. He was one of the 15 cadets that were selected through this method. In 1932, he joined the Indian British Army. From there on he continuously moved up the career ladder. In 1942, he earned the military cross. He played a crucial role in the India-Pakistan War of 1947. He was the chief of Army Staff between 1969 and 1973. During the 1971 war, he led the Indian army to victory.  For his courage, he has received Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.

She used to address her Grandfather as Sam and her grandmother as Silloo.  

She used to attend a boarding school in Kodaikanal. When she was in boarding school, her grandfather, Sam used to pick her up during vacations. Sam would write letters to all of his grandchildren regularly and Brandy Batliwala still cherishes those letters. Some of her fondest memories are of her grandfather playing pranks on her and making her laugh. While in the United States, her grandmother Silloo, used to regularly come and visit her.
