This cricket season started fast and furious. India and England had a series of their own, allowing us to see where these two teams stand now. India was the host because, in a few months, these two teams will open the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship in England. The Men in Blue are the favorites at every betting site we visited, and the reason for that is the India vs England games we saw earlier this year.
Five T20Is and three ODIs between January 22 and February 12 were both a magnet for the fans and an ideal test for both sides before the Champions Trophy, which India later won. So, for them, this was a great warmup.
Regarding the overall result, things were pretty one-sided, with the Men in Blue dominating. It was 4-1 in T20Is and 3-0 in ODIs, which describes the current difference in quality. No matter what everyone said, the hosts deserved this, even though England had their chances to win some of the games. Overall, the Three Lions were inferior and couldn’t compete with their big rivals. The India national cricket team vs. England cricket team match scorecard will tell you everything at first glance.
We will cover both series here, describing each event briefly and providing the most important facts.
T20 Series
Game 1 – Eden Gardens, Jan 22, India wins
The T20I leg kicked off on Jan 22 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, and India didn’t waste time but got straight to the point. A seven-wicket triumph set the tone, indicating what was about to happen in this series.
Abhishek Sharma’s cameo and Varun Chakravarthy’s tricky spin trashed the opponents, who looked tired and out of ideas. According to the match scorecard, English batters ended the day with 12 overs, 67 runs, and 5 wickets.
The sole bright thing in England’s game was their bowling attack. Led by Jofra Archer, it showed some of its talent, but India’s batting depth was just too much. Suryakumar Yadav was there to kill all the guests’ hopes, as he buried the guests when they needed the most.
Game 2 – MA Chidambaram Stadium, Jan 25, India Wins
The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai hosted the second T20I on January 25. Unlike the first event, this was much more interesting. India won by two wickets, chasing a total. This was the eighth consecutive victory in the T20I series for the India national cricket team, which tied the English 11-year run from 2010 until 2021.
Liam Livingstone finally woke up for England, delivering a fifty. But, on the other hand, Tilak Varma, the Player of the Match, sealed the win with a four. The result could have been different. Was it sloppy from England to let this slip? Absolutely. They had their chance and wasted it.
Game 3 – Niranjan Stadium, Jan 28, England Wins
Then came Rajkot on Jan 28. The 2022 World Cup champs finally showed up, putting up a solid performance. They stormed back to win from 127 for 8. Again, Liam Livingston was the best in England, and his spark boosted the morale of the Three Lions.
For once, India’s top order looked stunned as Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn’t find their rhythm. Some said they were tired from the first two games, but in our opinion, they were simply outplayed.
England’s “Bazball” lite approach clicked here, and for the moment, it looked like the Three Lions got back in the saddle. But it only looked like that because the next game showed India’s power.
Game 4 – MCA Stadium, Jan 31, India Wins
A bit fewer than 43,000 spectators saw India’s response after the previous loss. They would post a 15-run victory 181-166, restoring their confidence and getting back on track.
Shubman Gill’s fifty and Hardik Pandya’s versatility were the main reasons England’s middle order collapsed. The Three Lions weren’t completely outplayed, and they, too, showed a good game. However, their batting deficiencies against spin were way too visible, and as a result, India was two wins up yet again, 3-1.
Game 5 – Wankhede Stadium, Feb 2, India Wins
The last game was all about the hosts, who have posted their 29th victory in the previous 32 T20I events. Abhishek Sharma (135 (54) & 2/3 per match scorecard) won the Player of the Match award. He dominated the field, showcasing all of his talent and leadership.
England was beaten and humiliated in some situations, eventually losing 247-97. They looked without an idea and, worse, without a motive, which was especially painful for their fans and former players. The media’s headlines were full of criticism.
India’s T20I dominance was visible, and the reason for that was simple. It seems that the hosts wanted to win more. Sure, they had the home-court edge, but they also looked more hyped. On the other hand, England’s attitude was questionable, and as time went by, the Three Lions accepted their destiny, not resisting too much.
Suryakumar directed his younger Indian teammates, such as Abhishek and Yashasvi (who stepped up during the series), not allowing them to slow down even in the moments when the games were over.
England, meanwhile, looked like a deflated ball. The players had no solution, no response, and no desire to fight back.
ODI Series
India vs England ODIs began, meaning Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul were back in the mix. This wasn’t good news for the English team.
Game 1 – Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground, Feb 6, India Wins
The first game on Feb 6 in Nagpur was a close one, but only if we look at the result. India won by four wickets, yet they controlled things on the field throughout the entire time.
Buttler, with 52, and Jacob Bethell, with 51, pushed England, but on the other side, Shubman Gill had 87, Shreyas Iyer, 59, and Axar Patel added 52. However, everyone spoke about Harshit Rana and his three wickets on his debut. The 23-year-old couldn’t wish for a better start on the national team.
England’s bowling was sluggish, with Archer on the wrong foot throughout the contest, and their spinners were useless. All in all, it was embarrassing for a team of England’s pedigree, no matter the circumstances.
Game 2 – Cuttack Barabati Stadium, Feb 9, India Wins
The second game was at the Cuttack Barabati Stadium on Feb 9. It was all about Rohit Sharma. His 32nd ODI ton, a fantastic 100, pushed India to a four-wicket win, 308-304.
Gill had 50, with a 136-run opening stand that broke England’s spirit. Ben Duckett and Salt started brightly, but Varun Chakravarthy turned the tide, making him the happiest 33-year-old debutant in the world. He was the man who needs to be credited for this win as well.
England missed their chances. To be honest, they didn’t deserve to win. Rohit’s sixes off Mark Wood ended the game, and the IPL live score showed 2-0 in the series for the Indian unit.
Game 3 – Narendra Modi Stadium, Feb 12, India Wins
What happened next was a complete annihilation of the English team. The final result was 356-214 for the hosts, who were toying with their rivals. India had 356 runs, while England collected 214. The difference in the end was 142 runs, which is a huge disgrace for the English team. Kohli had a historic milestone. The match scorecard showed his 300th ODI, so we can say that it was a very nice day for all the Indian cricket fans.
Jacob Bethell was injured, and Tom Banton jumped in, having a solid performance but nothing special at all, 38 (41). Overall, this wasn’t a contest; it looked more like a bloodbath. All the numbers in the India national cricket team vs. England cricket team match scorecard were on the hosts’ side. India’s 3-0 sweep felt inevitable, putting an exclamation point on this whole series.
Summarise
India’s ODI machine was firing on all cylinders. So it’s no wonder why they won the Champions Trophy later on. Rohit, Kohli, and the bowlers were relentless. And they only indicated what was about to happen one month later.
England wasn’t competitive apart from a few occasions, but those were more random sparks. In the end, we saw them failing to do anything noticeable in the Champions Trophy.
The Tests Coming Up This Summer
Now, let’s speed up things for the upcoming summer. India will come to England for five Tests from Jun 20 to Aug 4. The Three Lions will no doubt want to even the scores and restore some of the honor they lost in India. Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval, all these iconic venues are going to see one hell of a cricket match.
Here is the schedule:
- Jun 20-24 Headingley
- Jul 2-6 Edgbaston
- Jul 10-14 Lord’s
- Jul 23-27 Old Trafford
- Jul 31 – Aug 4 The Oval
This will be the opener of the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship. India’s 4-1 win at home in 2024, as well as the most recent encounters we wrote about, gives them a mental edge. However, England will now have the home-court advantage. But pressure, too. We all know how the media in this country creates hype, which often cracks the teams, not only in cricket but also in rugby, football, and other sports.
India’s batting trio of Rohit, Gill, and Kohli will face a rigid test from Archer and Mark Wood. But England’s spin woes against Jadeja and Kuldeep could erase all that unless we see a huge improvement. Ben Stokes’ all-round game should bring stability, but all that is written here will depend on the next:
Can England’s top order handle India’s pace trio?
In our opinion, it all comes down to this. Whoever imposes its dominance in this particular clash will take away the victory in the Eng vs Ind contest.
Final Thoughts: India is a Favorite
India has a team at its peak right now. It appears that this unit has every position covered by an excellent individual, plus their chemistry is at a high level. We are talking about this not only because of the games against England but also because of the Champions Trophy. Failing to reach the ICC World Test Championship finals made them look in the mirror and step up.
England needs to look more motivated. They have to find that fire this team carried in the past. Until that happens, there won’t be any improvement, no matter the circumstances, venues, rivals, etc.
The T20Is showcased India’s depth and England’s inconsistency. The Three Lions looked better here than in ODIs. When we mentioned the ODIs, we saw India’s star power and individual quality in winning the matches. We won’t criticize England too much for this because they were already demoralized following all the losses in T20Is. However, that’s inadmissible for a team of their rank.
Tests this summer will be the real deal. We will see whether England manages to fight the adversity. Sure, the India national cricket team is an absolute favorite here, according to pundits, but England has a lot to prove. And they will have the stands behind them as well. You have to admit that it’s much easier when the crowd roots for you and tries to distract the rivals.
Eng vs Ind Tests will be interesting. Don’t miss them. In the meantime, follow IPL live score sites and stay tuned for all the latest results and news from the world of cricket.
